The Islamic Republic's naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz pose a persistent and severe threat to international security and the global economy.

Analysts say advanced US capabilities are sufficient to mitigate this risk and ensure safe navigation through the Strait.

The US Navy's mine countermeasures, spearheaded by Independence-class Littoral Combat Ships (LCS), is a powerful and comprehensive system for frontline mine warfare.

The US Navy also employs Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) equipped with advanced sonar systems.

These systems, such as the AN/AQS-20C, accurately detect, classify and localize both bottom and moored mines.

Additionally, the Navy utilizes the Unmanned Influence Sweep System (UISS), a semi-autonomous surface vessel, capable of detonating magnetic and acoustic mines, like Maham.

While this system achieved initial operating capabilities in July 2022, recent reports confirm the underwater drones' reliability for clearing mines across the Strait of Hormuz.

These capabilities are further bolstered by MH-60S Seahawk helicopters, equipped with the Airborne Laser Mine Detection System (ALMDS) and the Airborne Mine Neutralization System (AMNS).

Furthermore, the 2026 Barracuda Mine Neutralizer System represents the next generation of underwater mine warfare technology.

As a semi-autonomous underwater vehicle, it targets mines with high precision, particularly neutralizing threats that are non-responsive to traditional mine-sweeping systems.

Political analyst Faisal Ahmed emphasized "the persistent threat from widespread mines and their unpredictable displacement by ocean currents."

He stated that despite the high density of minefields, the US can quickly clear safe corridors.
